XACT Wire EDM was founded in 1984 by Jeff Gubbins and a partner. Prior to starting XACT, the two owners worked together for five years and held common beliefs about how to properly treat employees and customers. They also believed that to succeed, they needed to listen very closely to their customers, constantly hire and train good people, frequently acquire new advanced technology, always strive to improve, and be willing to quickly move into new application areas. From the very beginning, XACT was dedicated to providing the very best wire EDM service to customers in all industries. XACT is still keenly focused on wire EDM and continues to function as an extension of their customers’ own capabilities.
A History of Continuing Expansion
XACT started in 1984 with one wire EDM machine in a small rental space. With little financial resources or support in the beginning, those first years were challenging, but also interesting and exciting. Most customers were local stamping die and mold makers. Nonetheless, XACT grew rapidly and added additional wire EDM machines about every six months.
In 1986, XACT acquired a machine with software enabling 4-axis (independent U-V) cutting and automatic wire threading.
XACT built a 10,000 sq. ft. temperature-controlled facility for wire EDM in 1989. By 1994, we expanded with a fully equipped branch in Cary, IL, enhancing service for Chicago customers. Continued growth required the addition of 5,000 square feet in Wisconsin in 2005 and several additional machines featuring the latest linear motor technology and high precision capabilities. Moreover, as the Cary location grew, it too added customers from across the country. The Wisconsin location continued to add equipment and floor space.
Growth Rooted in Quality
Since XACT’s founding, outstanding quality systems have been in place. Due to its far-reaching geographic expansion and new markets, XACT pursued and received ISO 9001:2000 certification in 2007 and is currently certified to ISO-9001:2015. XACT has always heavily invested in support equipment for its wire machines. XACT has multiple programming stations, high-speed small-hole machines, video inspection systems, coordinate measuring machines, and laser part marking machines.
Applying Knowledge and Experience to Diversified Industries and Applications
Jeff acquired sole ownership when his partner retired in January 2019. He plans to continue to focus on wire and small-hole EDM. Medical machining applications will remain an area of growth for XACT as well as other challenging production applications from other high technology fields.
However, XACT has grown into a company with the resources and experience to handle the most demanding requirements in all industries. With over 45 EDM’s and many dedicated employees, XACT can take on virtually any size or type of project. However, XACT has learned a great deal over the years by listening closely to customers and by being focused on one field wire EDM.
